Hand Signals Every Banksman Must Know

September 11, 2026  ·  2 min read

When the operator cannot see the load, the signaller becomes the operator’s eyes. Clear, consistent signals prevent misunderstandings that can drop or strike a load.

The essential signals

  • Hoist (raise) and lower.
  • Slew or swing left and right.
  • Travel, boom up, boom down and telescope where applicable.
  • Stop, emergency stop and operations complete.

Good signalling habits

  • Use the standard signals agreed for the site and confirm them with the operator before lifting.
  • Stand where the operator can see you and you can see the load and its path.
  • Give one signal at a time, clearly and deliberately.
  • Only one person signals — except for emergency stop, which anyone may give.
When hand signals are not visible, switch to radio with agreed words and a dedicated channel.
