Choosing the Right Sling: Chain, Wire Rope or Webbing?

September 08, 2026  ·  2 min read

No single sling suits every lift. The right choice depends on the load’s weight, shape, surface, temperature and the environment.

Chain slings

Durable, adjustable and tolerant of rough handling and heat within limits. Ideal for heavy steelwork and harsh sites, but they can damage delicate surfaces.

Wire rope slings

Strong for their weight and good for heavy, regular lifts. They need protection from sharp edges and should not be bent tightly around small diameters.

Textile (webbing and round) slings

Light, flexible and kind to finished surfaces. They are vulnerable to cuts, abrasion, heat and some chemicals, so edge protection is essential.

Questions to ask

  • What does the load weigh, and where is its centre of gravity?
  • Are there sharp edges or delicate surfaces?
  • What is the working temperature and chemical environment?
  • Which hitch and sling angle will be used?
