Inspecting Shackles and Hooks Correctly

Shackles and hooks connect everything else in a lifting system. Because they are small and familiar, they are often overlooked — until one fails.

Shackles

  • No bending, cracks, excessive wear or reduced cross-section.
  • No signs of welding or heat damage.

Hooks

  • Throat opening within limits — an increase indicates overload.
  • No twisting of the hook body out of plane.
  • Wear in the bowl or saddle within the manufacturer’s limits.
  • Safety latch working and closing fully.
