When a load is too heavy, long or awkward for one crane, two cranes may share it. Tandem lifts are complex because the load each crane carries can change as the load moves, tilts or as the cranes slew.
Plan for load sharing
Calculate how the load is shared at every stage, not just at the start. Many planners apply a reduced percentage of each crane’s rated capacity to allow for uneven sharing and dynamic effects.
Coordinate the movements
- Appoint one lift supervisor to direct both cranes.
- Use clear, dedicated radio channels and agreed commands.
- Keep movements slow and simultaneous; avoid slewing both cranes at different rates.
Rehearse and review
Walk through the sequence with both operators and the rigging team before lifting. Tandem lifts are normally classed as complex or critical lifts and should be planned by an experienced appointed person.
